Experiencing Hakka Rural Villages

An Experience: Making Straw Men

Modern agriculture with its emphasis on efficiency replaces human labor with machines, resulting in the declining uses of rice straw. After harvesting rice, rice harvesters immediately grind the rice straw and leave the remains in the fields. Stacks of rice straw resembling shapes of huts and cones that were often seen before are gradually disappearing from rural landscapes.

For rural villages in the past, stacks of rice straw that remained after harvesting were important natural resources, which were stacked to make “rice straw huts” by farmers for future uses. Farmers would use rice straw to feed cows, to cover rice fields as a method of suppressing weed growth and of maintaining soil moisture, and to make straw men to scare away birds. In getting their hands on and thus getting to know natural materials, participated children can use their creativity and imagination to design one-of-a-kind straw men.

Local Good Things – Cultural Creative Products and Agrucultural Specialities

We will have booths that feature environment-friendly organizations, organic agriculture, traditional crafts, and cultural creative products. They will mainly sell organic produces, local specialities, and cultural creative products, and promote the concept of sustainble community environment.

Childhood Fun in Nature – DIY Hakka Childhood Toys

Using natural materials is an important concept of satoyama. A team of instructors will acquaint the participated children with different kinds of natural materials found in everyday lives, such as leaves, fruits, petals, and rice straw. In making these materials into fun childhood toys, the participated children will be inspired to develop interests toward lives and nature. Adults can share their childhood stories with these children, thus promoting parent-child relationships.

Discovering Meinong –A Unique Experience: Hakka Rural Villages

We have decided to have two to four additional sessions for this program to both modify the original two-day program itenerary and promote tourist attarctions of the Nanlung area. And this decision was made so that this program and the Green Soy Bean Festival share the same location. The Nanlung area is located at the southern part of Meinong, which was developed relatively late. During the Japanese colonial period, the Sanwu company recruited Hakka migrants from northern Taiwan to reclaim the Nanlung area, rendering the area a large agricultural one. In the migration process, the Nanlung area has also become a multicultural place with southern and northern Hakka populations. The Nanlung area is also home to groups of veterans and Baiyi tribes from Mainland China’s southwest border who retreated to Taiwan along with KMT troops. Their cultures are diverse and rich.
